Building Our Home: The Journey Toward the Washington Nepali Community Center
For over two decades, the dream of a dedicated space for the Nepali community in Washington has been a shared heartbeat among us. Today, we are proud to share that this long-held vision is transitioning from a series of conversations into a concrete reality.
A Foundation of Resilience
The seeds for this project were sown more than 20 years ago. Through the dedicated research and initiative of the Nepal Seattle Society (NSS), the groundwork was laid through tireless community meetings, viability studies, and the allocation of essential seed funding. While the global pandemic necessitated a temporary shift in focus toward urgent community health projects, the spirit of the "Building Project" never wavered.
Why Now? The Vision for Our Center
The formation of this center is driven by a singular, powerful purpose: to provide a safe, comfortable, and vibrant sanctuary where we can celebrate our rich culture, history, and traditions.
This center is designed to be more than just a building; it is a reflection of the diversity, unity, and grit of the Nepali people in Washington. It will serve as:
● A Cultural Hub: A place to honor our roots and pass our values to the next generation.
● A Resource Center: Providing space for education, empowerment, and community programs.
● A Social Anchor: Fostering deep bonds through entertainment, relaxation, and shared joy.
How We Are Moving Forward: Unity in Action
The revival of this project is the result of a powerful partnership between local Nepali organizations and a group of dedicated individuals. We are committed to a process that is both transparent and inclusive.
Following a series of community-wide brainstorming sessions—most notably on January 8, 2023, at the Mercer Island Library—a formal Working Committee (Ad-hoc committee) was established to lead the project with organization and professional oversight.
On January 22, 2023, this committee held its inaugural meeting in Kent to begin the hard work of turning our collective dream into a physical landmark. This is a project by the community, for the community, and we look forward to sharing every milestone with you as we build this home together.
